Engagement with kids

The question I am asked all of the time is  “how do I engage a child, particularly if they aren't interested’

Engagement = learning  = growth and successful outcomes for the child, family and paediatric team.

Creating a captivating and engaging environment is the cornerstone of any successful intervention, kindergarten or school. As a paediatric practitioner in the field of exercise physiology, I have come to recognise the paramount importance of a well-designed clinic setup that fosters curiosity, exploration, and learning. Now we will delve into my comprehensive 3-Level Approach to communication and engagement, starting with The Facility

Level One: The Facility

The clinic setup plays a pivotal role in shaping the overall experience for children and families. A thoughtfully designed environment can create a positive and inviting atmosphere, nurturing a sense of comfort and security. Here are some key aspects to consider when optimising your facility or learning institution for engagement:

  1. Acoustics and Lighting: A well-balanced acoustic environment with minimal distractions helps create a calm and focused space for children. Similarly, optimal lighting that complements natural light can enhance mood and concentration. We highly recommend lighting that can be adjusted for the sensory needs of the child. Low light for hyper sensitive children bright light for hypo sensitive children.
  2. Toys and Equipment: Provide a diverse range of age-appropriate toys and equipment that promote exploration and play. These tools not only stimulate curiosity but also facilitate various developmental milestones. Card Games are great, you can play memory while the child is kneeling on a wobble board, magic swords for pointing and crossing the midline.
  3. Services and Systems: Streamlined services and efficient systems ensure smooth communication and easy access for families. Implementing user-friendly processes enhances the overall experience for both children and parents.
  4. Communications, Values & Branding: Clear and consistent communication about your values, mission, and branding fosters trust and loyalty among clients and stakeholders.
  5. Marketing Strategy: Develop a robust marketing strategy to reach your target audience effectively. Utilise blogs, newsletters, and social media platforms to engage with your community and showcase your expertise.
  6. Practitioner Training: Invest in ongoing practitioner training to ensure that your team remains up-to-date with the latest developments in paediatric programming and engagement techniques.

Your role is pivotal in setting the foundation for a stimulating and supportive environment. By focusing on these key elements, you can establish an institution that stands out as a beacon of engagement and excellence.

Level Two: The Key Influences

Children are profoundly influenced by the people around them, especially during their early developmental years. As practitioners and caregivers, understanding and collaborating with the key influences in a child's life is essential for fostering engagement and promoting holistic development. Let's take a closer look at these key influencers:

  1. Family Members: Family forms the core support system for a child's growth and development. Working closely with the default parents and caregivers allows practitioners to gain valuable insights into the child's strengths, challenges, and preferences. Collaborating with families empowers them to be active participants in their child's developmental journey.
  2. Teachers: Teachers play a vital role in a child's life, especially as they spend a significant amount of time in educational settings. Effective communication and collaboration between practitioners and teachers ensure a cohesive approach to support the child's engagement and progress.
  3. Other Allied Health Practitioners: In some cases, children may require support from multiple allied health practitioners. Ensuring open lines of communication and sharing relevant information between these professionals is essential for comprehensive and coordinated care. At our clinic we send weekly notes to the allied health team after each session.
  4. Paediatricians: Paediatricians provide crucial medical insights and assessments. Collaboration with paediatricians helps identify any underlying health issues that may impact a child's engagement and informs the development of tailored intervention plans.
  5. Support Workers: For children with specific needs, support workers can provide invaluable assistance in facilitating engagement and participation in various activities.
  6. Peers: Peer interactions are fundamental to a child's social-emotional development. Encouraging positive peer relationships and social interactions can enhance engagement and create a supportive learning environment.

Understanding and addressing any potential barriers or challenges within these key influences can significantly impact a child's engagement and overall well-being. As practitioners, building strong partnerships with families and professionals ensures a holistic and coordinated approach to support each child's unique developmental journey.

Level Three: The Child & Exercise as a Secret Developmental Sauce

Exercise, play, and physical activity are not just fun and games for children; they form the bedrock of their development. As children engage in various forms of movement, they unlock a wealth of developmental benefits. Let's delve into the incredible impact of exercise on different aspects of a child's growth:

  1. The Sensory System: Exercise plays a significant role in stimulating and regulating the sensory system. Activities such as climbing, jumping, swinging, and balancing provide essential sensory input, helping children process and interpret the world around them more effectively.
  2. The Cognitive System: Physical activity has a profound impact on cognitive function, enhancing memory, attention, and problem-solving skills. It fosters creativity and critical thinking, supporting overall cognitive development.
  3. The Social-Emotional System: Through group activities and play, children learn essential social skills such as cooperation, communication, and empathy. Exercise promotes emotional regulation, reducing stress and anxiety levels.
  4. Language and Communication: Physical activity provides opportunities for language development through verbal communication during play and interactions with peers and caregivers.
  5. The Motor System: As children engage in various movements, they develop essential motor skills such as balance, coordination, and fine and gross motor abilities. These skills lay the foundation for future academic and life success.

Exercise acts as a secret developmental sauce that nurtures all areas of a child's growth. Integrating purposeful movement into a child's daily routine not only promotes physical health but also optimises their overall development.

Incorporating the 3-Level Approach to Engagement:

To harness the full potential of engagement, practitioners can adopt a comprehensive 3-level approach that addresses the facility or learning institution, collaborates with key influences, and utilises exercise as a secret developmental sauce. By combining these three levels, practitioners can create an enriching and supportive environment that fosters holistic development in children.

Unlocking the power of engagement is not a one-size-fits-all endeavour. It requires dedication, collaboration, and a deep understanding of each child's unique needs and strengths. As practitioners and caregivers, our commitment to nurturing bright futures for our young learners is paramount.Together, let's continue to champion the importance of engagement and build a strong foundation for every child's success.
